Admissions Information

We are an academy school and therefore our admission authority is Abbey Multi Academy Trust.

The school’s admission authority sets the admission policy every year. You can read our school’s admission polices below:

  • In-year applications to start at our school between September 2023 and July 2024 – read our 2023/24 policy
  • In-year applications to start at our school between September 2024 and July 2025 – read our 2024/25 policy
  • Applications for year 7 places in September 2025 – read our 2025/26 policy

How to apply for a September 2025 place

If you are applying for a year 7 place for September 2025, all applications are made in advance. Offers are made by local authorities on national offer day.

You must apply to the local authority who empties your bins. If this is Calderdale, applications must be made via the Calderdale Council admission process. The online application form and further information on the admission process can be found on the Calderdale Council website.

In-year applications

If you're moving into Calderdale or want to transfer your child into our school mid-year, you need to make a school transfer request – often called an in-year application.

Moving schools can be a difficult experience for a child. You should always speak to your child's current school before trying to move to see what support they can offer you

How to apply for an in-year place

Parents or carers seeking to transfer to Lightcliffe Academy should make an application using the In Year Application Form which can be obtained from Calderdale Council (www.calderdale.gov.uk/admissions).

All transfer requests are considered at a fortnightly meeting of secondary school senior leaders, which are held during term time only. Each Calderdale secondary school is represented at these meetings. Parents are required to ensure that Part B of the application form is completed by their child’s current/previous school prior to submitting the In Year Application Form.

Calderdale Council will write to confirm the outcome of the application.

Waiting Lists

Subject to any provisions regarding waiting lists in Calderdale Council’s co-ordinated admission scheme, the Academy will operate a waiting list for each year group. Where in any year the Academy receives more applications for places than there are places available, a waiting list for year 7 places will operate until the end of the Autumn Term.

Waiting lists will be maintained for all year groups by the Academy and it will be open to any parent to ask for his or her child’s name to be placed on the waiting list following an unsuccessful application. A child’s position on a waiting list is not fixed and is subject to change during the year, i.e. they can go up or down the list as it will be determined solely in accordance with the oversubscription criteria set out above.

Where a place becomes vacant, this will be allocated to children on the waiting list in accordance with the oversubscription criteria.

Appeals

If you are not offered a place at the school you requested, you will have the right of appeal. The appeal panel is independent of the school and council and the decision is legally binding. Before you appeal you:

  • should accept any place that you have been offered in case your appeal is not successful
  • should think about why you are appealing and check if it's likely to be successful
  • could read the advice for appealing school places on GOV.UK
  • could get independent advice on making an appeal from a charity

Appeals information and appeal forms can be obtained by contacting the clerk to the independent appeal panel:
