Lightcliffe Academy has been removed from Special Measures following a recent Ofsted inspection. Its predecessor, Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School, was placed in Special Measures in May 2014 and became part of Abbey Multi Academy Trust on 1 March 2015. The Inspection took place a year to the day following sponsorship by Abbey Multi Academy Trust. Senior staff are delighted with the report which confirms the Academy no longer has any inadequate features. While there are still areas to develop, already identified by the Academy, Mr Chris Smith, HM Inspector, states ‘Since their arrival, the Executive Principal and the Principal have overseen a period of rapid change and development of the Academy. They are highly ambitious for the Academy’s future’ adding ‘Strong and incisive leadership has transformed the Academy.’ He goes on to compliment the Academy on the improvement in teaching and classroom behaviour, saying ‘it is improving quickly’ and ‘leaders have targeted the right things’. He states that ‘teachers hold high expectations and ensure that there is sufficient challenge and support as necessary. They ask effective questions that probe pupils’ thinking and strengthen their understanding of the concepts being discussed.’ The Ofsted team found that pupils are ‘polite, courteous and respectful of one another’ further reflected in an improvement in attendance and pupils who ‘wear the Academy uniform with pride and look smart’. There are improvements in the 6th form with ‘a significant number of new initiatives to improve teaching and learning and raise achievement.’ The CEO & Executive Principal of Abbey Multi Academy Trust, Mrs Carol Kitson, commented “I am pleased Ofsted have confirmed our view of a rapidly improving Academy. We are determined to continue on this upward trajectory so that all students and the whole community have the Academy it deserves and one which reflects the aspiration and ethos of the Multi Academy Trust.” Thomas Rothwell, Principal, commented “The report is a reflection of all the hard work of the students and staff and is a step towards our stated aim to make the Academy the school of choice for the local community.”
